Imperatives

Give commands, instructions, warnings and suggestions with the bare verb — no subject needed.

Rule

The imperative is the base verb without a subject: Open the window. Negative: Don't + V1. Suggestions that include us: Let's + V1. Add please to soften it.

Formula

  • Please makes it polite: Please wait. / Wait, please.
  • Instructions and recipes use it: Mix the eggs and sugar.
