Do / Does

Auxiliary verbs for questions and negatives in Present Simple.

Rule

After do/does, the main verb is in its base form without -s. In normal positive sentences, the auxiliary is not needed.

Formula

Positive (+)I/You/We/They + V1He/She/It + V-s/esI work every day.She works every day.
Negative (-)I/You/We/They + don't + V1He/She/It + doesn't + V1I don't know.He doesn't understand.

Notes

  • Does she work? correct (not Does she works?)
  • do/does is not needed in normal positive sentences
