Comparison of adjectives

Comparer des personnes et des choses : les adjectifs courts prennent -er/-est, les longs more/the most, et une poignée de formes irrégulières s’apprennent par cœur.

Règle

Les adjectifs d’une syllabe (et ceux de deux syllabes en -y) forment les degrés avec -er / the -est. Les plus longs emploient more / the most. Le comparatif s’accompagne de than ; le superlatif prend the.

Astuce

Compte les syllabes : une, ou deux terminées en -y → ajoute la terminaison ; plus long → place more / the most devant.

Remarques

  • Le superlatif prend presque toujours the : the best, the most expensive.
  • Certains adjectifs de deux syllabes en -le, -er ou -ow prennent aussi -er : simple → simpler, clever → cleverer, narrow → narrower
  • Pour l’égalité, as … as : She is as tall as her brother. À la négative : not as tall as.
  • Pour un grand écart : much / far + comparatif — This one is much better.
