Already / Just / Yet

Les trois mots qui vivent dans le Present Perfect : just pour il y a un instant, already pour plus tôt que prévu, yet pour ce qui n’a pas encore eu lieu.

Règle

Place just et already entre have/has et le V3. Place yet à la fin de la phrase, et uniquement dans les négations et les questions.

Astuce

Deux se placent au milieu, un attend à la fin : I have just eaten, I have already eaten — mais I haven't eaten yet.

Structure

Affirmative seulement : I have already eaten.Négative et question : I haven't eaten yet.
C’est déjà fait : The film has already started.On attend encore : The film hasn't started yet.

En conversation

  • AHave you packed for the trip yet?
  • BI've already packed the clothes, but I haven't found my passport yet.
  • AI have just seen it on the kitchen table.

Erreurs fréquentes

  • Incorrect : I have finished my homework yet.Correct : I have already finished my homework.Yet ne fonctionne pas dans une phrase affirmative : emploie already.
  • Incorrect : I haven't already eaten.Correct : I haven't eaten yet.Les négations prennent yet, et il se place à la fin.
  • Incorrect : She has arrived just.Correct : She has just arrived.Just se place entre has et V3, jamais à la fin.

Remarques

  • Already dans une question marque la surprise : Have you already finished? (déjà !)
  • Yet peut aussi signifier « jusqu’ici » dans une question : Has he called you yet?
  • En anglais américain courant, on entend le Past Simple avec ces mots : I just ate. L’anglais britannique garde le Present Perfect : I have just eaten.
