May / Might

May et might disent qu’une chose est possible sans être certaine ; may sert aussi à demander la permission de façon formelle.

Règle

Emploie may / might + V1 pour la possibilité : It may rain. Might paraît un peu moins sûr que may. May I…? demande la permission de façon formelle.

Structure

Possibilité (+)Subject + may / might + V1It may rain later.She might come tomorrow.
Négative (-)Subject + may not / might not + V1He might not agree.
Permission (?)May I + V1?May I come in?May I ask a question?

En conversation

  • AMay I ask a question?
  • BOf course, go ahead.

Remarques

  • Échelle approximative de certitude : must = 90 %, may = 50 %, might = 30 %
  • À l’oral courant, Can I…? remplace May I…? — may est plus formel
