The
S’emploie quand les deux interlocuteurs savent de quoi il s’agit, ou quand la chose est unique.
Règle
Emploie the quand la chose est déjà connue, déjà mentionnée ou précise dans la situation, ainsi que pour les choses uniques comme the sun. Il est aussi figé dans des familles entières de noms : mers et fleuves, massifs, noms de pays au pluriel, journaux, hôtels et musées.
Astuce
Une seule question tranche presque tous les cas : mon interlocuteur sait-il déjà duquel je parle ? Si oui → the. Si ce peut être n’importe lequel → a/an.

Remarques
- Sans article : Dogs are friendly. (pluriel au sens général)
- Sans article : Water is important. (indénombrable au sens général)
- Sans article : I live in Paris. (la plupart des noms de personnes, de villes et de pays)
- Sans article : repas, langues, sports et matières scolaires — have breakfast, speak English, play football, study history
- Sans article : by car / by bus / by plane, at home, at work, in bed
- Les montagnes et les lacs isolés ne prennent pas d’article : Mont Blanc, Lake Annecy — mais les massifs, si : the Alps
