Countable & Uncountable

I nomi numerabili si contano uno per uno e hanno il plurale; i non numerabili indicano sostanze e idee e restano al singolare.

Regola

I numerabili prendono a/an e hanno un plurale. I non numerabili (water, money, advice) non hanno plurale né a/an: misurali con some, much o a piece / cup / bottle of.

Suggerimento

Hai un dubbio? Prova a contare: one money, two moneys — non funziona, quindi il nome è non numerabile.

Errori comuni

  • Sbagliato: an advice / advicesCorretto: advice / a piece of advice
  • Sbagliato: The news are good.Corretto: The news is good.

Note

  • Non numerabili comuni: water, milk, money, time, advice, information, news, furniture, bread
  • Some/any, much/many e a few/a little dipendono tutti dalla numerabilità: consulta le relative schede
  • Alcuni nomi funzionano in entrambi i modi: two coffees = due tazze di caffè; a hair = un singolo capello
  • I non numerabili richiedono un verbo al singolare: The news is good. Money makes the world go round.
